April tenth will mark the one hundredth anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel, The Great Gatsby. As A.O. Scott notes in a latest tribute, when first published, The Nice Gatsby bought off to a gradual begin. Initially, “Assessmenters shrugged. Gross sales had been sluggish. The novel and its writer slid towards obscurity.”
It wasn’t till the Forties that Gatsby belowwent a revival. Critics started to re-evaluate Fitzgerald’s novel, and the U.S. military “distributed greater than 150,000 copies of ‘Gatsby’ to American servicemales during World Warfare II,” all to help bored soldiers kill time. From there, Gatsby’s “cultural footprint increaseed. Paperagain editions professionalliferated, and the novel was name-checked by youthful authors, including J.D. Salinger.” At the moment, with some 30 million copies bought worldbroad and a minimum of 5 movie adaptations to its title, The Nice Gatsby has established itself as an enduring American classic.
In January 2021, The Nice Gatsby lastly entered the public domain, enableing creators to utilize the literary work in different methods.
